(CN)- Rapper Lupe Fiasco says an education non-profit cancelled a benefit concert he was supposed to headline less than 24 hours before the show, and he is owed $66,000 from the group.
Transform America is a New York City non-profit that works "to advance human rights by building synergy between student, non-profit, for-profit and community organizations," according to the group's website.
In late 2011, Transform America planned a benefit concert for November 7 that would feature Lupe Fiasco as its headliner.
However, as the Chicago-based rapper was boarding a plane to the event, he was informed that the concert was cancelled, according to a complaint by his loanout company FNF Touring.
"Defendant, by its own admission, cancelled the Event due to lack of funding but posted a false statement on its website that [Lupe Fiasco] cancelled the Event due to illness," the complaint says. (12)
Though Transform America took the false statement off the website, it circulated the same statement in emails sent to ticketholders, the complaint says.
The rapper and his talent agency say they lost more than $66,000 from the last-minute cancellation of the show.
In addition, Transform America's attorney allegedly told the rapper's attorney that she "should walk away because if you sue my client, just imagine all the bad press your client will get for suing a non-profit." (33)
